Prepare your band recording day

A 36 m² live room fills quickly when everyone experiments at once. This guide is for bands booking band and live recording with us on Overtoom — realistic timelines and what to finish at rehearsal first.

Band discussing session plan at studio table

Pick a recording strategy

Three common paths: everyone together (energy, less fixability), rhythm section first plus overdubs (control), or live drums/bass with guitars later. At Morigliolink up to 6 musicians fit at once; larger line-ups rotate or split into blocks.

Decide before booking. A full eight-hour day is €1,190; overtime is €195 per hour. Need a short overdub block? The hourly rate is €165.

Setlist and tempo on paper

Send a setlist with target songs, preferred order and rough duration per track. Note BPM (click yes/no), key and where breaks land. No click? Name the rhythmic anchor — usually drums — so we can align edits later.

Demos without heavy mastering are enough for us to read arrangement and dynamics. We usually reply within 1 business day via contact.

Instruments and backline

Drums: decide which pieces you truly need; fewer mics means a faster line check. Guitars: fresh strings, intonation set, fix buzz before load-in. Bass: active DI plus amp mic if you want both — budget extra setup time.

Amps live in the room; we keep volume sensible for isolation into the vocal booth (7 m²). Individual headphone mixes use our 8 sends; flag who needs a loud click before the session.

A day structure that works

Typical day: 30–45 minutes load-in and line check, 15-minute breaks every 90 minutes playing, 60-minute buffer for issues. Do not open with the hardest song; warm up on something stable. Vocals in the booth often follow rhythm section so singers are not waiting hours.

Opening hours: Mon–Fri 10–20, Sat 10–18. Reach us by tram 1 or 7 — see The studio is on Overtoom in Oud-West. Tram 1 (Overtoom stop) and tram 7 (Marnixplein stop) are a short walk away. From Amsterdam Zuid station, allow about 15 minutes on tram 1 towards Centraal. Bike racks are in front of the entrance; car parking is limited — use Q-Park Byzantium (Overtoom) or on-street spaces outside blue-zone hours.. Parking is limited; bike racks are in front of the entrance.

Rehearsal room vs. studio clock

Decisions that belong in rehearsal should not eat €165 time: intro length, endings, who doubles what. One band « director » (not always the singer) communicates changes to our engineer.

If you want part of the day for mixing, say so when booking — some bands track three songs live and send stems later; read deliver stems for mix for export rules.

Volume, neighbours and monitors

Oud-West means mindful levels, especially evenings. We align takes with Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00. Closed Sunday. By appointment only.. Amps do not need to be maxed: a clean take at moderate volume mixes faster than a distorted room mic.

Monitor conflicts? One person cannot win every cue — pick reference listeners for click and balance before take one.

Admin and payment

30% deposit on confirmation; business clients may use 14-day terms where applicable — see terms and conditions. Free cancellation up to 7 days ahead.

We retain project files 12 months; see privacy policy for your rights. VAT on studio services: 21%.

Vocalists and next steps

Singers: read vocal warm-up and avoid booking right after a late gig. After tracking, many projects need mastering (€85 per stereo song) — plan loudness only after the mix is final.
